The TRIPS project is Australia’s first national database for multi-modal trip survey data. At TRIPS, we are committed to transforming the transport planning and engineering industry with innovative data solutions. Our team combines industry and academic expertise, ensuring our tool meets the needs of diverse stakeholders across Australia.
Together, we’re shaping smarter, data-driven transport planning solutions for the future.
Supun is the Project Director of TRIPS and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney. Drawing on both his industry and academic experience, he conceived the idea of TRIPS to create Australia’s first national database for multi-modal trip and parking survey data. This tool aims to help transportation planners and engineers better understand movement demands across different land uses and contexts.
Supun is a transportation engineer with over 15 years of industry experience across Australia and New Zealand. Before joining ITLS, he was an Associate Director in the Transport Advisory team at Urbis. He has also held senior transportation engineer/planner roles at Stantec and Transport for NSW. Supun is the co-founder of Fernway Engineering, a transportation engineering and planning consultancy.
Supun holds a bachelor’s degree with first-class honours in Civil engineering from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, a master’s degree in transportation engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD in transportation network modelling from the University of Sydney.
Michael is the Project Manager and the Research Lead of the TRIPS project and is responsible for providing research directions that underpin the tool.
Michael is the Foundation Professor of Ports and Maritime Logistics at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney. Before joining the University of Sydney in 2012, he was Professor of Transport Operations and Director of the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre (PORTeC) at Imperial College London.
With a research focus on ports, maritime logistics, transport network modeling, traffic engineering, and intelligent transport systems, Michael has authored numerous papers and books, including Transportation Network Analysis (2007). He also served as Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part B for 17 years. In 2005, he founded PORTeC, a pioneering research and consultancy center in ports and maritime logistics.
Michael holds a BA in Economics from Cambridge University, an MSc in Transportation, and a PhD in Freight Distribution from Leeds University.
