Michael is the Project Manager and the Research Lead of the TRIPS project and is responsible for providing research directions that underpin the tool.

Michael is the Foundation Professor of Ports and Maritime Logistics at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney. Before joining the University of Sydney in 2012, he was Professor of Transport Operations and Director of the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre (PORTeC) at Imperial College London.

With a research focus on ports, maritime logistics, transport network modeling, traffic engineering, and intelligent transport systems, Michael has authored numerous papers and books, including Transportation Network Analysis (2007). He also served as Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part B for 17 years. In 2005, he founded PORTeC, a pioneering research and consultancy center in ports and maritime logistics.

Michael holds a BA in Economics from Cambridge University, an MSc in Transportation, and a PhD in Freight Distribution from Leeds University.
